How to Perform the Sterilization of Surgical Instruments

Introduction:

Sterilization of surgical instruments is a crucial step in maintaining infection control in healthcare facilities. It is important to ensure that all instruments used during surgical procedures are properly sterilized to prevent the transmission of of bacteria, microorganisms etc for patient safety.

Gamma radiation is a method of sterilization commonly used for surgical instruments, healthcare products, medical devices and packaging material for medical and pharmaceutical industries. This process involves exposing the instruments to high-energy gamma radiation, which destroys microorganisms and renders the instruments sterile.

Different types of sterilization for medical components?

Radiation sterilization uses a gamma radiation wave through an electron beam or cobalt 60 gamma chamber. This radiation is relevant to bio-burden of product, which means the manufacturers will have to determine the intensity of gamma radiation needed to sterilize the product without damaging it based on its bioburden count. Before a gamma sterilization dose is considered as validated, a bioburden test needs to be performed to determine the correct dose of verification for the sterility test. There are few types to be considered when learning about sterilization using radiation which includes: gamma sterilization, e-beam sterilization, and x-ray sterilization.

1. Gamma Sterilization

Gamma irradiation sterilization services is a safe and cost-effective method for sterilizing single-use medical devices such as syringes and surgical gloves. One of the key advantages is that it allows already packaged products to be sterilized and products are ready to use after process. It is eco friendly, clean and fastest way to sterilize high density materials and products.

Radiation is also a safe and cost-effective process for sterilizing single-use medical devices such as syringes orthopedic implants, clean room products, pharmaceutical drugs, etc. Akshargamma is one of the gamma irradiation plants in India. We are operating in sterilization of instruments in the hospital. More than 40 percent of all single-use medical devices produced worldwide are sterilized with gamma rays. Akshargamma helps its clients in disinfection of medical devices, OT instruments and sterilization of products using gamma irradiation.

2.  Electron-Beam Sterilization

E-beam or electronic beam acts as an extremely high-energy electron, capable of destroying the bio-burden of a medical component. These high-energy electrons also collide with other local electrons, but the secondary electrons have enough energy to adequately destroy the bio-burden increasing the dose. Every succeeding collision reduces energy of the resulting electrons as the e-beam infiltrates further into the medical device. It continues until there is no penetration power left in the e-beam.

3.  X-ray Sterilization

It allows unsurpassed dose uniformity performance compared to other medical sterilization processes. It has a unique property of narrow angular distribution focused in the direction of the product that is going to be sterilized. X-ray radiation sterilization thoroughly treats the surface and the interiors of the equipment offering superior penetration during sterilization.

Summary

Akshargamma is a gamma radiation sterilization facilities India. We provide gamma irradiation of medical and surgical products and devices in our fully automated Gamma Irradiation Plant with most updated technology that allows packages of any size to be gamma irradiated, as a value-adding service to provide our clients with safe, reliable, and state-of-the-art facilities to fit their requirements.
